Chapter 26. Disorders of the Autonomic Nervous System, Respiration, and Swallowing
Add about 15 drops of this blend to 5 oz. This is the first time all three of you have shared a common experience for quite a while. It is most normal and most natural for any sufferer to experience any combination of: How long it takes the infant to return to a normal level of emotion after an exciting or upsetting experience and how readily the child falls asleep. At this point we are going to take a quick look at the origins of anxiety-based disorders. We all need a place to go, where we can be alone with our thoughts, especially when we are upset or troubled.

What causes it?

Why A Fast Heart Beat Isn’t Dangerous

It has been referenced in ancient texts, dating back more than years. It shows up repeatedly in the works of important ancient healers, like Pliny , Dioscorides and Avicenna. We all know it was given to the Baby Jesus by the three wise men.

And Cleopatra used it to make her trademark eyeliner. This sacred and therapeutic oil has been worth more than gold for much of human history. One in particular is Boswellic Acid. Many studies have shown its ability to act like a Cox 2 inhibitor to reduce inflammation in the body without the unwanted side effect of damaging the gut lining. Boswellic Acid reduces inflammation by blocking the lethal enzyme 5-lipoxygenase 5-LOX and decreases the activity of human leukocyte elastase HLE.

This makes Frankincense essential oil a great candidate to add to any autoimmune protocol for conditions such as: And this goes beyond Autoimmune conditions. Basically any disease ending in -itis — a suffix used to denote inflammation — can be helped with the use of Frankincense. Frankincense also contains compounds called sesquiterpenes , which have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and deliver these powerful anti-inflammatory compounds to the brain. Frankincense protects skin at the cellular level and therefore makes it an excellent candidate for all your beauty needs.

It can improve skin tone, reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and large pores, and fade scars and stretch marks. For clear and radiant looking skin, add a few drops of Frankincense to your favorite facial moisturizer. Or make your own beauty elixir by adding a few drops straight to sweet almond oil if you have normal to dry skin, or jojoba oil if you have oily skin.

Emperor Nero used it to hide the tell-tale signs of nights of debauchery , by dabbing Frankincense around his eyes. The oil firms the skin and reduces puffiness making it an excellent addition to any eye cream.

One of the active compounds in Frankincense is Incensole Acetate , a neuro-active chemical that has a profound effect on emotions. Many report that Frankincense has the ability to stabilize mood — grounding and relaxing yet invigorating and elevating at the same time. If you find yourself moving into a fearful or negative space, or dealing with a bout of anxiety or depression, try placing 2 drops under your tongue upon waking.

You can rub the oil on the bottoms of your feet to reduce nervous energy. Frankincense can also be very sedating, if used right before bed. To drift effortlessly into a restful sleep, diffuse Frankincense in your bedroom at bedtime. This is largely due to the psychoactive properties of Incensole Acetate found in Frankincense.

This compound has been shown to have anxiolytic, anti-depressive, and sedative effects , which calms and lifts the mood — putting one in a perfect state for meditation. Frankincense has also been recognized as a powerful mindfulness trigger. If you use this consistently during times of meditation, prayer, journaling, or yoga, the pathways in your brain will start to remember and associate the smell with a time to be introspective and open the doors to spiritual awareness.

To add a boost to any spiritual or meditative practice, place a drop of Frankincense essential oil on your Third Eye Chakra , located in the middle of the forehead, just above the eyebrows or at the base of your neck.

You can also diffuse the oil in the area of your practice. The anti-inflammatory properties of Frankincense have been shown to decrease joint pain, muscle soreness, and arthritis.

A study was done showing that an extract of this natural painkiller reduced the pain of osteoarthritis patients , after just 7 days of treatment. To soothe sore muscles or body pains, if you have a chronic condition, or after strenuous workouts, athletic events, or just a long day, massage the essential oil directly into sore muscles and joints.

Just add a few drops of Frankincense to a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil or shea butter , and rub where needed. Frankincense is creating quite a buzz in the area of cancer research. Scientist and healers have turned the world upside down looking for a cure for cancer.

Major funding is being pumped into this research and the results are downright impressive — showing high efficacy in treating breast , bladder , colon , skin , stomach , and pancreatic cancers.

Are you ready to join me in the Frankincense fan club? Run out to your local health store? Well, hold your horses… we need to talk about quality first. Not all essential oils are created equal and some can be downright dangerous for you! Synthetic oils might smell good but they contain no phytochemicals and are not natural or beneficial to the body.

They are formulating expertly crafted blends and the purest single essential oils available on the market. I also chose them as my go to essential oil source because their commitment to quality is unmatched by any other essential oil company in the market with their S.

What makes them different is the levels of active phytochemicals they contain. My choice is Sacred Frankincense. The boswellia trees in this area yield a higher quality of resin, and when extracted produces a better oil. Boswellia serrata and Boswellia carterii are the other varieties I like, but only for skin care.

Since Sacred Frankincense is the highest quality variety of Frankincense on the market, you will notice that it is slightly more expensive than other varieties.

Today, we use Frankincense for more than just our first aid, beautifying, and religious needs. In ancient times, stories were told to the masses that Frankincense trees only grew in the most dangerous deserts and were guarded by dragons who would annihilate them if they sought to collect the precious resins on their own. There are amazing companies, like Rocky Mountain Oils , crossing the deserts and crafting some of the most therapeutic varieties of Frankincense essential oils for us.

Do you have experience using it? Tell me in the comments below. It became increasingly harder for her to be on the road much of the year, supporting her growing international client list. Refusing to go the conventional medical route to regain her vitality, she implemented an Autoimmune Paleo Rotation Diet. While researching natural diet and lifestyle modalities for reversing chronic illness, she came across the work of Jordan Reasoner and Steve Wright at SCDLifestyle.

Their deep passion for creating massive change in the world through educating people on what REALLY works to heal the body from chronic diseases was so inspiring to her that she quickly joined their team.

Since then, she has been a part of helping hundreds of thousands of people all over the world with chronic illness. The company has now expanded to train health practitioners on how to create successful online businesses to reach the people who need them most. Tap water from London formed no crystals at all.

Spring water generally produced the most beautiful crystals, as did water from holy places such as Lourdes. Masaru Emotos next experiment was playing music to water. He placed distilled water in between two speakers and played one piece of music fully at normal volume. Then he froze the water. Classical music produced beautiful crystals of slightly different colours.

Healing music, a Tibetan mantra and folk music also produced beautiful crystals. Heavy metal music produced a pattern that looked like a crystal that had exploded into a thousand pieces. Japanese pop music produced ugly square-shaped crystals rather then the normal hexagonal ones. Don Campbell, in his book The Mozart Effect, shows how music, particularly Mozarts, has all kinds of beneficial effects for human health. Scientists suggest that listening to Mozart helps us to improve our powers of concentration and enhances our ability to make intuitive leaps, by organizing the firing pattern of neurones in the cerebral cortex.

The foetus prefers Mozart and Vivaldi to other composers. When pregnant mothers listened to Mozart and Vivaldi, the babies heart rates invariably steadied and kicking declined. Rock music drove most foetuses to distraction and they kicked violently when it was played to their pregnant mothers. Slower tempo music slows our breathing rate. The human heartbeat will tend to match the rhythm of music.

Listening to Pacabels Cannon, for instance, at around 64 beats per minute, the rate of a resting heart beat, will slow our breathing rate and heart rate and change our brain wave pattern from beta to alpha.

Music will also calm our nervous system and affect metabolism. The pitch and rhythm of music influence the limbic system, affecting our emotions. Scientists concluded that preferred music may elicit a profound positive emotional experience that can trigger the release of hormones, which can contribute to a lessening of those factors which enhance the disease process.

Music is now used to reduce the pain and anxiety of patients undergoing dental treatment and surgical operations. In his research, Dr Mike Lewis found that classical music works on the whole brain, whereas pop music affects only one side of the brain.

He says, I recommend that those who are looking for a peak experience try classical. Mozart is a great place to start, but it is a question of trial and error, find what works for you. Dr Tomatis found that a child traumatized by an enraged or screaming adult learns to survive by shutting out these noises. Once the hearing shuts down the child will find it hard to learn.

This explains why some people can sing in tune while others consider themselves tone deaf. It is impossible for us to make a sound unless we have heard that sound or note before. I have found from experience in teaching voice work that once a persons hearing is reawakened then they can begin to hear what is sung to them and can then accurately copy this sound. Toning is defined as to make sound with an elongated vowel for an extended period. Toning with other people creates a feeling of unity.

It also helps us to release stress and repressed emotions. Regular toning and humming helps to re-energize the body and restore health to the mind, body and spirit. Toning has a neurochemical effect on the body, boosting the immune system and causing the release of endorphins. Toning assists in good breathing and posture.

The muscles of the digestive system are massaged and stimulated by regular toning. Toning has also been effective in relieving insomnia. Alfred Wolfson was a German-born singing teacher who was plagued by the sounds of artillery and human agony that he experienced as a soldier in the trenches in World War I. Wolfson cured himself of aural hallucinations by singing the terrible sounds that haunted him.

He went on to develop a therapeutic method that was based on using the voice. He taught his students to make spontaneous noises, including those of animals, birds and even machines. Using Jungs concept of the anima and animus, Wolfson taught that by extending the vocal range through singing exercises, one could contact the opposite polarity within oneself, thereby integrating the psyche and healing a variety of psychological and physical conditions.

Laurel Elizabeth Keys, in her book Toning the Creative Power of the Voice, says, A whiny weak voice will suck in negativity, attracting lingering illness like cancer, asthma, allergies, tumors, rheumatism and arthritis. No healing will be possible until the person reverses their tonal pattern. Laurel discovered toning by accident.

One day her body became filled with a sound so great that she had to express it. Each time I toned, my body felt exhilarated, alive as it had never felt before, a feeling of wholeness and extreme well-being. Dr Tomatis discovered the power of chant after visiting a monastery in France. The new abbot had stopped the monks chanting. The Benedictine monks normally chant for six to eight hours a day. The abbot believed that the Gregorian chant served no useful purpose and that without it they could recapture that time for other things.

The monks had been chanting in order to charge up themselves, but they hadnt realized what they were doing. As the days passed they became more and more tired.

A procession of doctors came to the monastery over a period of several months. They changed the monks diet and sleep patterns but the monks became more tired than ever. When the abbot called in Dr Tomatis in February , Tomatis found 70 out of the 90 monks slumping in their cells like wet dishrags. He reintroduced their chanting immediately. By November, almost all of them had gone back to their normal activities, their prayer, their few hours of sleep, and their arduous work schedule.

Entrainment The principle of entrainment explains how sound healing works. A harmonious sound projected at a person who is in a state of disharmony will eventually bring them into resonance with the harmonious sound. Our atoms, molecules, cells, glands and organs all have a vibrational frequency. Sounds from outside our body will stimulate sympathetic vibration in the molecules and cells of our body. Intention The sound wave created by a person singing or playing an instrument will carry information to the receiver of the sound.

We all know that a song can be sung with a loving intention or an aggressive intention. When a mother sings a lullaby to her child, the child feels the love in the mothers voice and is rocked to sleep. At a football match, fans sing aggressive chants directed at the opposing supporters and their team. Here the intention is to intimidate.

Sympathetic Resonance When two objects have similar vibratory characteristics that allow them to vibrate at the same frequency, they form a resonant system. When a C tuning fork is struck, another C tuning fork close by will also begin to vibrate. For healing to occur there must be a resonance or rapport between healer and patient. Pure Tone Jonathan Goldman in his book Healing Sounds says, "When we have learned techniques for harmonic toning, the human voice is able to create nearly every frequency, at least within the bandwidth of audible frequency.

When our body receives a pure tone our muscles will relax and tension will be released. Sound Healing When working with a person in a sound healing session I use my voice to scan over their body. I find that my voice will break up over areas of their body where there is pain, disease or poor function. I then administer sound healing through my voice using different tones, vowel sounds and harmonics until the imbalance is cleared.

I use healing songs, prayers and mantras. I will also help a person find their fundamental sound. I use a wide range of sound healing techniques to treat all conditions. These include combining my voice with instruments, using sound in combination with bodywork, encouraging the person to express their pain through sound, using tuning forks and different musical intervals. Dissonant intervals can be used in sound healing to help a person to get in touch with painful emotions.

When the dissonance is resolved by sounding the interval above, the person listening will experience a feeling of release, lightness and joy. If the person has experienced deep trauma, I will often chant the persons name to call back their spirit. Sound healing can be combined with other healing therapies such as massage and bodywork.

After a sound healing treatment most people report a feeling of deep relaxation and an improvement in the function of mind and body. Structural imbalances in the body will often correct themselves during the sound treatment. Thirty minutes exposure to this volume can cause lifelong hearing damage.

During a workout the body directs blood away from the head to the heart, legs and arms making hearing more susceptible to damage. The US magazine Health reported the story of a 34 year old woman who had attended aerobics classes for 15 years who had such severe hearing loss that she needed to wear hearing aids in both ears.

According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health prolonged exposure to sound above 85dBs can cause hearing damage. The decibel scale is a logarithmic scale which means that 95dB is ten times louder than 85dB and dB is a hundred times louder than 85dB.

The resultant hearing loss is so great that an eighty year old Sudanese villager hears better than a thirty year old American. Noised induced hearing loss now begins at an early age. Loud sounds cause a constriction in the blood vessels in the ear and destroy the delicate hair cells in the ear that transfer sound vibrations into nerve stimuli.

Damage to these hair cells can cause tinnitus, hyper or hypo sensitivity to sound as well as hearing loss. One of the main causes of hearing loss is the prolonged listening to loud music on personal stereos.

Most personal stereos are capable of producing sounds up to dB. The French Parliament has recently legislated to reduce the maximum volume on personal stereos to 90dBs. According to an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association between the 7th and 12th grade the average teenager listens to 10, hours of rock music.

A scientific study in found that adolescents who preferred heavy metal and rap music had a higher incidence of low school grades, school behaviour problems, drug and alcohol abuse problem and arrests compared with adolescents with other musical tastes. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that heart disease and hypoglycaemia were worse for workers working in noisy industries compared with those working in non-noisy industries.

A study by Dr Shirley Thompson at the University of South Carolina found that exposure to excessive noise may raise our blood pressure by as much as ten percent. She found that exposure to loud noise increases the body's secretion of adrenaline causing the heart to beat more rapidly. Researchers at the University of Los Angeles found that the death rates for people living under the flight path of Los Angeles airport were substantially higher than for those people living in a comparable community living eight miles away from the airport.

Loud noise, particularly sonic boom can also affect the unborn foetus causing congenital malformation. The UCLA researchers also found that noise pollution impaired the development and communication skills of children. A researcher in New York corroborated this finding. She found the school children whose classroom was on the train track side of a school were lagging one year behind a class of the children of the same age whose classroom was on the other side of the building away from the noise of the trains.

A recent report on ABC News stated that scientists have noticed that underwater noise pollution from supertankers, oil exploration and military sonar is disrupting the breeding and migration patterns of sea creatures. Certain species of birds living by noisy roads or airports are failing to learn their mating calls from their parents and are unable to attract a mate.

Dr Tomatis the French ear, nose and throat specialist has spent over fifty years researching the effects of sound on the human body. Tomatis found that learning difficulties in children are directly related to hearing difficulties.

Considering a healthy heart, the main pacemaker is a collection of cells on the border of the atria and vena cava called the sinoatrial node. Heart cells exhibit automaticity which is the ability to generate electrical activity independent of external stimulation. As a result, the cells of the node spontaneously generate electrical activity that is subsequently conducted throughout the heart, resulting in a regular heart rate.

In absence of any external stimuli, sinoatrial pacing contributes to maintain the heart rate in the range of beats per minute bpm. In this context, the vagus nerve acts on sinoatrial node slowing its conduction thus actively modulating vagal tone accordingly. This modulation is mediated by the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and downstream changes to ionic currents and calcium of heart cells.

The vagus nerve plays a crucial role in heart rate regulation by modulating the response of sinoatrial node, vagal tone can be quantified by investigating heart rate modulation induced by vagal tone changes. As a general consideration, increased vagal tone and thus vagal action is associated with a diminished and more variable heart rate. RSA is described as the physiological and rhythmical fluctuation of heart rate at the respiration frequency, characterized by heart rate increase during inspiration and decrease during expiration.

Another role that the parasympathetic nervous system plays is in sexual activity. In males, the cavernous nerves from the prostatic plexus stimulate smooth muscles in the fibrous trabeculae of the coiled helicene arteries to relax and allow blood to fill the corpora cavernosum and the corpus spongiosum of the penis, making it rigid to prepare for sexual activity. Upon emission of ejaculate, the sympathetics participate and cause peristalsis of the ductus deferens and closure of the internal urethral sphincter to prevent semen from entering the bladder.

At the same time, parasympathetics cause peristalsis of the urethral muscle, and the pudendal nerve causes contraction of the bulbospongiosus skeletal muscle is not via PN , to forcibly emit the semen. During remission the penis becomes flaccid again.

In the female, there is erectile tissue analogous to the male yet less substantial that plays a large role in sexual stimulation. The PN cause release of secretions in the female that decrease friction. Also in the female, the parasympathetics innervate the fallopian tubes , which helps peristaltic contractions and movement of the oocyte to the uterus for implantation.

The secretions from the female genital tract aid in sperm migration. The PN and SN to a lesser extent play a significant role in reproduction. The parasympathetic nervous system uses chiefly acetylcholine ACh as its neurotransmitter , although peptides such as cholecystokinin can be used. Most transmissions occur in two stages: When stimulated, the preganglionic neuron releases ACh at the ganglion, which acts on nicotinic receptors of postganglionic neurons.

The postganglionic neuron then releases ACh to stimulate the muscarinic receptors of the target organ. In vertebrates, nicotinic receptors are broadly classified into two subtypes based on their primary sites of expression: Sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions typically function in opposition to each other.

The sympathetic division typically functions in actions requiring quick responses. The parasympathetic division functions with actions that do not require immediate reaction. A useful mnemonic to summarize the functions of the parasympathetic nervous system is SSLUDD sexual arousal , salivation , lacrimation , urination , digestion and defecation. The parasympathetic nervous system promotes digestion and the synthesis of glycogen , and allows for normal function and behavior.
